There’s More to Me Than OCD

DSC_0387The purpose of this blog is to shed some light on the reality of OCD.  In my experience, this disorder is thrown around too loosely.  However, I want to make it clear, that my life is not at all depressing!  I am in the happiest relationship of my life, I’m at a great place with my family members, and I am finally living on my own.  Therefore, I want to share with you some things about me that are NOT OCD related, just so that everyone knows that I’m a “normal” person underneath my disorder.

Here are 20 random facts about myself:

1. I have a college degree (a B.A. in Speech and Hearing Sciences to be exact)  😀

2. I love cats (as if you didn’t know that already)DSC_0386

3. I studied German for 4.5 years and Korean for 1 year.

4. My entire high school student body was less than 600 people.

5. I played the trumpet in middle school.

6. I am a farmer’s daughter.  Yep, that picture is my daddy’s farm.

7. I knew about “Gangnam Style” long before it became a song 😉

8. My long-time partner is Korean and I have eaten enough Kimchi to say that I am an honorary Korean.

9. Norman Reedus (a.k.a. Daryl from “the Walking Dead”) is my celebrity crush.

10. I believe in the paranormal and am a self-described conspiracy theorist.

11. My favorite movie is “Schindler’s List,” but I haven’t been able to watch it more than once.

12.  My favorite band of all time is Nirvana.

13. My tongue is longer than the world’s longest tongue in the Guinness Book of World Records.  I have no frenulum, so there’s basically no limits to how far I can stick my tongue out.

14. My favorite TV shows right now are “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story.”

15. When I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian.

16. My favorite novel is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.  I have read it twice already, which is something that I never do.

17. I have never broken a bone.

18. I have an older sister and a younger brother, who were my best friends growing up.

19. I love to sing all of the songs from The Phantom of the Opera.

20. If I could go anywhere in the world, it would be South Korea.  I want to meet my boyfriend’s family and friends and see the place where he grew up and get the opportunity to understand his culture better.

I told you these were random!  I was scraping for things to write toward the end.

Please share with me some random things about yourselves. I would love to read them.

  1. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I’ve had some compulsions but never full fledged OCD. And I love the Walking Dead too! If Darryl dies I’m out though.

  2. Megan, thank you for stopping by my blogs. I love your list of things about yourself…. I think we are all a little weird at heart! And yes, like everyone else here, I too would like to see a pic of that obscenely long tongue….but I understand why you won’t post! Have a great day.

  3. You might like the film The Night of the Iguana. It is an old black & white film, based upon the stage play by Tennessee Williams. It’s about life as an inner journey & redemption. It’s not full of action, in fact, it is slow–but it has a beauty & humanity that has always inspired me. I even have the play, and like to read it from time to time.

  4. Thanks for liking my post on Living in Rural Mallorca! Loved reading your 20 things . . . made me think it’s probably a useful exercise to do. Love the photo of the cat – what a handsome creature.

  5. Many people suffer with mental and emotional challenges and are afraid to share the information. I respect your courage and honesty. I liked your random fact list. Let’s see – I know i have some random facts about me too. 1. I had my first child at the age of 17 and the whole experience deepened my belief in a greater power. 2. I wanted to be a veterinarian but was not able to go back to school for that so I became a goat farmer. 3. I too love all things paranormal and have cats too, and dogs. My kids are grown so they are my furry kids. There are more but this is your party.

I hope you get to make that trip to Korea. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and appreciation 🙂 Your life sounds amazing. I have never met a goat farmer, but my father is a farmer and it’s a great life in my opinion. My cat is definitely my furry child 😉
I know what you mean there.

    1. hahaha! Norman Reedus is hunk enough for everyone 🙂 I made the best picture of our zombie wedding, photoshopping my head on a bride, his on a groom, and zombies in the background 🙂

  6. Thanks for liking my blog. I also love cats and I currently have one that looks just like yours. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  7. Hi Rachel, thanks for liking my blog, “gottafindahome.”

I also have OCD and live a ‘normal’ life, what ever that is. I work a nine to five job, train at a gym three evenings a week, attend a Pilates class Monday at noon. I paint portraits, write poems, spend my noon hours with homeless people. I love all animals and believe they know much more than they let on. I have seen spirits and listened to them talking. I have learned, after many years of experimenting, that it is better to give than to receive.

I am now following your blog and look forward to reading all your posts.

    Cheers,
    Dennis

  8. Thank you for visiting my web site. I write a lot about paranormal events, and try to update my blog each day, if possible. Any comments on my pages are welcomed. (I also like to sing along with “Phantom of the Opera”.) I was very blessed to have seen it “live” when I was in London. I also enjoyed your blog page… very inspiring.

  9. I think there are millions of people , myself include who can fit into the OCD spectrum. I don’t like labels. It is just a facet of all that you are… and everyone else on the planet. quarks and all…..

  10. Great post, and I’m looking forward to learning more about you. I, too, love cats (all animals)…but that makes you less “normal,” FYI. 😉 I think Schlinder’s list might be one of my favorite movies, if I could bring myself to watch it even once. I have a college degree, too! When I was little I wanted to be a vet AND a killer whale trainer. Oh, and I have a very good friend with OCD.

  11. Thanks for visiting my blog! While my boyfriend isn’t Korean, he’s in love with Kimchi — I feel like we are getting there with the “honorary Korean” title as well 🙂 Definitely one of my favorite foods!

    1. 😉 This is interesting, since it’s not a favorite among many non-koreans! It’s a unique taste for sure, but I have to say, I prefer my ancestral Sauerkraut more. 🙂

  12. Thanks for liking my blog post. This is a good idea. I need to think of 20 random things about myself…besides the fibro and all of it’s goodies. Here’s one. I am completely freaked out by the mushrooms that just pop up in your yard overnight! Oh, my skin is crawling just thinking about it. Do you mind if I do a 20 random things list on my blog? I don’t want to steal your idea; I was inspired by it.

  13. I used to live in the country for about 11 years & had a dog & 3 cats which were great to have if no one else was around. I have been honored by knowing after all these years that I am considered a genius by a lot of friends I talk to on Facebook. I love auto racing! Sports was a great thing for me when I had 5-6 different ailments of my own which almost kept me from living!

    1. 🙂 It sounds like we have a lot in common. I think a lot of ppl mistaken me for someone of high intelligence, but I’m not so certain I agree 🙂

  14. Thank you for liking my blog…been off and on tumblr for a bit but once i decided to go more full time just didnt like the format. I’d like to get into some of your other posts bc my oldest son in addition to the Asperger’s is a touch OCD and just like I try to learn from adult Aspies think I could also learn some things from you to help him.

random things about me…just cause you asked
I have two autistic children though they are opposite ends of the spectrum
I can say I’m Tired in 4 languages (English, Spanish, French, and German…in German class my name was Frau Mude no idea how to get the dots on there lol)
I write music and used to be a karaoke DJ
I started cloth diapering when my youngest was 2 1/2
I taught myself how NOT to use a pressure cooker today lol

    1. My stepbrother has Asperger’s, so I can relate a bit to what your son struggles with. I like your “random things”, particularly the part about the pressure cooker. If you’ve any questions, please feel free to ask 🙂 I’m always a willing helper.

  15. You might want to add OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) at the beginning. I believe I have Asperger’s syndrome but I would never want to be diagnosed. I believe labelling of people does more harm than good. My philosophy is I wake up each day and open my eyes and do the best I can.

  16. Hi Megan, thanks for liking my post about SSDI. I too have been diagnosed with OCD, although it is much better than it was in the past. That is just one of my many diagnosis. I am an oldest in my family with two younger brothers. I gave birth to 3 boys and one girl. My 3rd child, a son, died at 4 days old. I am a grandmother. I went to school and got a degree in nursing and worked as a nurse for a couple of years…until my health took a nose dive. I love life and am hopeful that my health will improve…again. Thanks for sharing your life with me.

    1. Thank you so much for introducing yourself and sharing yourself so openly. It can’t have been easy on you losing your son. I’m so sorry to hear that. I wish you the best of luck with improving your health and am so glad to hear from you.

  17. Hi Megan

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I have Parkinson’s disease, I stammer and I have depression and it is very easy to define yourself in relation to those things. But as you nicely point out there is more to us than our problems. We have space in our lives to be us!

  18. 1. I always wondered what the proper name of “tongue flap” is.
    2. Schindler’s List, Nirvana, Pride and Prejudice, and Phantom of the Opera, all favorite things of mine as well.
    3. Suddenly, I love the strawberries I used to not care much for, and no longer like mango, which I used to love. This winter messed up my taste buds?

  19. Excellent way of explaining, and nice article to obtain
information concerning my presentation subject matter, which i am going
to deliver in institution of higher education.

  20. I love your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you make this website yourself or did you hire someone
