Believe It or Not, There Are Things I Like

Here are a few pictures from this weekend.  I went out to campus and to my father’s farm and took a few pictures of things I found lovely and wanted to share with the world.  I hope they brighten your day at least a little 🙂

Up close with Chester and his tongue ;) Of course, I have to include a pic of him.

A few posts ago, I wrote about the things I dislike, which is something I came up with at a time when I was feeling down and negative.  A fellow blogger suggested that I then write about the things that I like.  I have set a personal goal this year to be more positive, so I thought the idea of coming up with the things I like was an excellent idea.  I sat down, and in my new lovely journal I wrote a list of things that I like.  I did this last night after a long day of just being outside and enjoying the weather, but surprisingly it was difficult to come up with a list of things.  The following are things that I like, love, or just enjoy 🙂

  1. Beautiful days when I can work outside
  2. Writing poetry & fiction
  3. Reading, non-fiction
  4. Collecting books & teapots
  5. Shopping, for anything really.  I have a sad addiction to Target.
  6. Cats, something which you all probably already know.  I’m kind of obsessed with my cat Chester.
  7. The smell of gasoline.  This seems random, but I thought it quirky enough to share.  I’ve always liked this smell, even as a kid.  Strange, huh?
  8. Taking pictures.  I do not consider myself  a photographer, but I do like to take pictures and then share them with others.
  9. Waking up to my cat sleeping in awkward positions on my pillow.  It helps me to wake up with a smile.
  10. Cleaning/organizing.  This calms my anxiety, or perhaps it fuels it?  Any way, I like to do it.
  11. Refinishing old furniture.  You’ve see one of my projects aka the filing cabinet, but I’ve done a few others that I’m proud of.
  12. Watching “The Office” and “Family Guy.”  My heart is being ripped out of my chest because the series finale of “The Office” is on this Thursday.
  13. Spending time with my boyfriend and family. I got to see my family this weekend and I haven’t spent time with just my sister and nephew in so long.  I can’t believe how much he’s grown.
  14. Nature in general (except insects/arachnids of any kind)
  15. Going to the theater.  I especially love musicals, but I like plays too.  I have yet to go to an opera and I don’t know why because the opera here is supposed to be excellent.
  16. Singing
  17. Fresh air, but who doesn’t.
  18. Meat loaf and comfort food in general.  I miss my grandma’s cooking.
  19. Wine tasting.
  20. Visiting museums.  I like any kind of museum, but I especially like to visit historic homes.
  21. Experiencing other cultures.  I had the chance to visit England and Germany in 2007 and my family and I still talk about that trip.  My next goal is South Korea or Italy.
  22. Sleeping!  I don’t get enough of this.
  23. Taking walks in the evening.
  24. Drawing.  I’m not the greatest artist, but I do enjoy this.
  25. I love frozen yogurt.  My bf and I eat it all the time.  I think there are four or five frozen yogurt shops in this small city.

  26. Herbal teas, particularly peppermint.
  27. Skin care products, you’ve seen my earlier posts about this 😉
  28. Assassin’s Creed & Call of Duty (any version of either)
  29. Showering.  I do to much of this, hence my fragile hair and skin.
  30. Baking.  I like to bake, when I have the energy and time.

I tried to make this list longer than the dislike list 😉  In my journal I wrote 21 things and then when I started actually writing this post, I couldn’t stand the odd number, so I went for an even 30.  In all honesty, 30 kind of annoys me and I would have liked to round it off to a better looking number, like 40 or 50, but 30 will do.  I’m strange I know.  Toward the end I was getting sleepy and even though it’s nearing night time, I am thinking about taking a short nap.

I hope you enjoyed this list.  I’d love to hear some of your likes/loves/pleasures!  Please share 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Best,

Megan

  1. 1,3,5,7 (because it reminds me of hanging out at race tracks), 10 (also not sure if it calms or fuels), 14,17,18,20,22,23,27,29, and 30 (which I’d do more of if I didn’t lose control and pig out each time, lol). Great post, I’ll have to do the same. 🙂

  2. ((((hugs)))) when you are down it is so hard to think of anything positive – so I am very, very impressed with your list. I have started trying to write 3 things that were good or that I was grateful for each day in my journal. Some days it is a struggle to come up with 1, let alone 3 but I found it has been helpful in re framing some of my thoughts.

    1. Aw, thank you so much! i am down a lot, but I always manage to bring myself back up. This was definitely a good way to do so. ((hug)) back!

  3. Nice! Have you ever been to The Henry Ford (Museum/Greenfield Village)- I used to work there a long time ago, it’s a great place! They have a neat fireworks show on the 4th with the symphony and Holiday Nights is really nice, too. Worth a trip, if you like historic homes!!

  4. I love regency romance, or any book written in the 18th and 19th century. I love snorkeling. Only get to do it yearly, but I would snorkel every day if I could! I also love a really clean house where nothing is out of place, but that is a fantasy in my house. 🙂 Otherwise, your list is pretty compatible with me. And I LOVE BLOGGING 🙂

    1. I have never been snorkeling, but want to, and I DO love a clean house 😉 In fact, my bf and I were waxing his car just now and I came in to get a drink of water. Thirty minutes later I emerge after a random bout of sudden house cleaning syndrome 🙂

      1. Squirrel! I totally understand the lure of cleaning over other jobs. I end up wandering away from projects and find myself straightening up, which seems like an endless project with 4 messy cats, 2 messy kids and a messy husband. 🙂

      1. I have a bike, but it’s sitting and rusting. I need to start riding that thing 🙂 It seems like you enjoy it quite a bit and it’s probably a great workout. Glad the thunderstorms have stopped!

      2. I use it for quick errands, workout rides, and long lazy rides to take pictures. I love e bike, have since I was a kid :). I thi k you would like it too :). And, my dear, do not sell yourself short. I’ve seen your pics, read your posts, seen your drawings and read your poetry. None of us are professionals, but you are damn good :). Very talented lady!

      3. Our city is very bicycle friendly for the Midwest, so perhaps I should start 🙂 It would be great for going to the grocery store for those random things I sometimes need. 😉

You’re so kind 🙂 Thank you for saying that. I really appreciate it.

      4. Wouldn’t tell ya if it wasn’t true :).

And e bike is perfect. I hit the grocery store, pharmacy, butcher, and drop off dry cleaning all by bike. If the car goes in the shop, I drop it off and bike home. So many things.

Just haven’t figured out how to pick up the dry cleaning and get it home without it being all wrinkly when it gets home 🙂

      5. 😉 It does sound really convenient. That’s funny about the dry cleaning. Just one of those things you never really think about until you’re in that situation I guess.

  5. Very positive post Megan. Very nice pictures and Chester is just adorable. Cats, watching the birds and to look at other animals are for me the best on the list to stay positive 🙂

  6. I enjoyed this post, mostly because it seemed you enjoyed it once you started! I’ve been trying to get myself to keep a gratitude journal so as to focus on the bright side of life, and your post encourages me to do that! Thank you 🙂

    1. I definitely did 🙂 It has helped me to consider the important things in life a bit more. Glad to hear from you again. It’s been awhile 🙂

  7. What a great list and lovely pics. I especially love the photo of your cat! I like a lot of the things you like, including- nature, shopping, The Office, frozen yogurt, peppermint tea and drawing. I also love when my cat sits on the armrest of my couch and I can rest my head on her and hear her purring. It’s relaxing.

    1. I love to hear a cat’s belly noises and of course, purring. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and find that I’m sleeping on a cat pillow with no recollection of how it happened 😉 I think we could definitely be friends.

    1. 😉 He is definitely a character. You should see some of the past pics, particularly the one in the post called “Say Cheese!”. It might haunt your dreams.

  8. There you go. It was easy and you know what? Most of the things you like I do or like too. Taking pictures of flowers for instance and baking cakes. I made as cake for my wife and our guests for Mother’s Day.

A great blog and you can see for yourself that the “likes” more than balance the “dislikes”. Keep it up 🙂

  9. Thanks for this post! I’ve been having a rough couple of days where it’s just hard to find enjoyment, period. That mushroom picture made me smile- they’re so adorable!- and you reminded me how I used to make lists of things that made me happy when I was a teenager.

    1. 😉 They are cute. My bf laughed when I climbed up into the yard that they were in, but now I can prove to him that it was worth it 🙂 Thank you

  10. This is a great way to be positive – someone gave me advice once that if I write down a list (even just 5 things!) that I’m happy about or grateful for every night for 30 days it’ll become a habit to think about positive things!

  11. As with your dislikes, we share many of the same likes too. I can empathize with you, our issues are similar and different at the same time. Gardening for me is what cleaning sounds like it is for you, but you also mentioned doing anything outside as a like. Now that it is warming up some, I plan to get outside more. I loved your pictures, keep them coming

    1. Aw thank you! Definitely we could be friends 😉 I would love to garden if I didn’t live in an apartment 😦 I have been outside all evening waxing my bf’s car with him and that’s rewarding enough. Just trying to enjoy this 80 degree weather we’re having 🙂

  12. What am amazing list! I’m glad there are so many things that make you happy. When we sit down and think about it, there really are a lot of them. And I love the fresh air and Family Guy ones, among many others. 🙂

  13. nice list. i should make one of these for those times when life sucks so i can go back and remember the good things 🙂 i envy you on No. 22. my sleep kinda has an expiry policy. i can never just sleep when i want to! i have to be TIRED, or its got to be nighttime- when i try to sleep anytime i want to, my neck and back gives me HELL! sucks :-((

    1. 😦 That sounds awful. I’m sorry you go through that. For some reason my body gets tired at about 10:30 every night, which is a good thing, but I can never stay up late if I want to.

  14. Hello Megan: I love your blog. I think that you are an awesome lady with a lot of gifts and talent. Yes, you may struggle with OCD but we all have something that we struggle with everyday, but alway know that GOD will help you with the struggles and what ever come your way in this life. Your blog is a blessing because it can help someone else that may be struggling with different things in life. I love the picture of your grandparent farm and I also like your list of things you like. When you think positive it will make your day and life more brighter. Be Bless, DIVA Iketha

    1. Hello Iketha 🙂

Very nice to hear from you. Even though I do struggle, it’s a joy to help people in any way I can and if that means simply sharing my experiences and offering up support, that overshadows my struggles any day 🙂 Thank you for your kindness and encouragement 🙂

  15. Things I like? You, coffee, beer, cosmology, mathematics, physics, astronomy, aliens, skeptisism, emotion, art, seeing patterns, the fibonacci sequence (0,1,1,2,3,5….), pi, open minded people, intelligent people, poetry, cats, water, faith, intuition, dolphins, cheetahs, music, metaphors, similes, visual thought, memories, watermelons, seafood, grape juice, koolaid, pop, every kind of woman there is, the brain, the mind, the genetic code, and philosophy.

  16. I love coming home and having a conversation with my cat as though it were a baby… “Who’s a good little hungry kitty?” and giving her a little cuddle because we missed each other 😀
I also love riding the bus in a warm, bright afternoon during the week when mostly everyone is working or studying, I get to gaze on Auckland and watch the world go by in the warmth!

    1. Sounds like a lovely place to live 🙂 We are two 23 year olds on opposite sides of the world, but we both love to cuddle our kitties when we come home from a long day out and about. I love to hold him up to my ear and hear his purring 🙂

  17. What a lovely idea, to post things you like! I think that’s a great way to feel a bit more optimistic.

  18. I love the pictures. I feel I am able to experience the outside through your eyes. I am thinking about making an I dislike/I like list myself thanks to your inspiration.

  19. Hey hey hey Miss Megan! Been outta the loop with blogs lately but happened to catch up a bit on yours. About this post and the list of your likes: #5 – my sister has a HORRIBLE addiction to Target. There could be lots worse things to be addicted to! haha; #7: I understand the gasoline thing! I liked it when I was a kid too (not so much now). I can’t explain it, but I think I know what you mean!; #12 – when you mentioned “Family Guy,” the first thing I thought of was Peter singing the “Cowboy Butt Sex” song. LOL My favorite Family Guy episode ever! #18 – comfort food is the BEST! #22 – If sleeping was a job, I’d be paid BILLIONS by now. Love the list! (Oh, I completed your survey BTW.) :o) Have a great day! Keep up the good stuff!

    1. Hey! I’ve missed hearing from you 🙂 It’s been awhile it seems.

I have so many fav family guy episodes, but I think my most favorite is the one when Brian hooks up with Quagmire’s dad, who has recently had a sex change 😉

You and I share some awesome fav things 🙂

      Thanks for taking the survey!

  20. Enjoyed reading your list! We have many “likes” in common! I am glad you did your positive list to counter your negative / “dislike” list. Kind of like my poem “Python” on my blog….very sad and negative…it was my writing instructor that suggested I write a “response” and get out of the Python’s grip! I love (or should I say “NEED”) to write when I am down and out, but I think it is a good idea…therapy of sorts…to write positive out of it afterwards if we can. Looking forward to reading more of your blog!

  21. I love horses, cars, motorcycles & jumping with them, the gas smell which is intoxicating, race cars & being on a track with others, all sports, bike riding, food, reading books that help me learn about myself, making suicide drinks from soda pop, being in love, taking my woman with me to all my favorite spots & letting her see me do things I have done in the past which she really enjoys, learning about my wife’s family & her also, making my life better since I am 51 now, finding how much it takes to grow younger as the body thinks about being older, & a lot more,.

What are your experiences?
