The Zoo!

A flamingo that I got surprisingly close to.
A flamingo that I got surprisingly close to.

I would first like to thank everyone for taking the survey 🙂  It was an incredibly opportunity to get to read them and to get to know some of my fellow bloggers a bit better.  If everyone is ok with it, I would love to post the results of the survey in an upcoming post 🙂 Just let me know otherwise!

I had quite the interesting memorial day.  I made my first attempt to paint on canvas with acrylics and voila! I painted what you see below.  Not that great, I realize, but it was still fun nonetheless.  I am liking watercolors too, so perhaps if I’m satisfied with one of those creations as well, I might share one with you.  I want to keep what I write at least somewhat entertaining and I think my attempts at art are just that 🙂

Memorial day was quite interesting as well.  My bf and I went to the zoo, something we haven’t done since we first began to date.  We were both pretty excited about going because it would be the biggest zoo we’ve ever been to and it was supposed to be a beautiful day, which it was.  We got there and, of course, the GPS told us to enter the wrong entrance.  By this time, we needed to use the restroom (sorry to be gross).  That’s what a cup of coffee will do to you on an hour long drive.  Anyway, we finally found it after going a mile out of the way and making a U-turn.  Because it was Memorial Day, I assume it was much busier than normal.  There were far too many people for my comfort zone and quite a number of interesting folks as well.  I find that the most unusual sorts of people come from nowhere and show up at places like the zoo, amusement parks, or even dare I say it, Walmart.

I can’t say I would ever go back, but I do love zoos.  Well, I thought I loved zoos.  I don’t remember them being as commercialized as all this and I definitely remember them being nicer and more animal oriented.  This all seemed to be about the zoo making money, and I understand that because they have to take care of the animals and keep the place running, but it was all too much.  It was just a tourist trap.  The nice day turned out to be hotter than we expected.  It always seems that trips to the zoo or mound sites are always nuclear hot and today we are both feeling the repercussions of that.  On the way home, I was super nauseated, probably from dehydration and the heat.

Anyway, enough about the complaining. That’s my biggest flaw.  I complain too much.  I had a wonderful time and got some great pictures of the zoo life.  I enjoyed spending the day with my bf when I would normally be at work.  It’s nice to have those times to spend with someone we love, just the two of us, enjoying one another’s company.  It’s times like this when I’m reminded why I fell in love with him in the first place.

What did you all do this Memorial weekend (if you have this holiday that is)?  I’d love for you to share!

In the meantime, have a look at some of the zoo pics I took!

Cute elephant. I swear he was posing.

  1. Have to watch myself. Remember Simon and Garfunkel’s “Momma’s Takin’ Us to the Zoo Tomorrow”-? Got singin’ it reading this post. Was starting to cobble up some new words, but stopped myself—you probably DON’T NEED ANY REMINDERS of your poor experience! Still might be nice to visit on a LESS BUSY day…but that’s your call. RE: the survey…When I said I’d like to meet you…that includes your bf. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! It was my first time to paint something like that and I’m happy that it didn’t turn into a total hunk of crap 🙂

    1. Aw, thank you Tony! That really means a lot to me. We couldn’t decide if we wanted to go to the zoo or the exotic feline rescue, but we chose the zoo, but it was still fun. Definitely take them there 🙂

      1. I’m sure the Seattle zoo is great 🙂 If ever I get a chance to visit, perhaps I should stop there. That, and probably a number of very touristy things.

  2. I recently went to the zoo with my boyfriend and it was delightful. I guess it all depends on the type of zoo you go to. The one I went to wasn’t too commercialized.

  3. I remember taking a boyfriend to the zoo once – but he still found his way back.
    Seriously, nice photos.

  4. I think that when we were kids we didn’t notice what is now recognized as blatant attempts to separate you from your money. Took the kids to Great Wolf Lodge recently and it seemed that being in a huge water park @ $300/night was not enough. There were lots of attempts to get more from us to “intensify” our experience. It was a matter of standing firm and the kids only remember the great water park and not what they were denied. So, don’t let commercialism drive you away from activities you love.

  5. That painting is really nice. I’ve seen abstract stuff in the museum that wasn’t that good.

Personally, I kind of hate the zoo. I love the animals, but I hate the fact that it’s almost always too hot, it smells, and there are usually way too many people.

  6. Nice pictures. It has been a while since I was at the zoo. And how did I miss your survey. (I kind of like surveys, especially if my answers make any difference 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

  7. I must agree with you about the zoo. When I was little we went there for the animals, but now it’s all just very commercialized. It’s not at all what I remember. We don’t even go anymore. Since you asked, we spent our day in the mountains. My husband did some metal detecting, my son attacked ‘enemies’ with his stick sword and I took lots of pictures, which I’ll probably post a couple on my blog this week. Also, a completely off topic and potentially strange observation – you have perfect teeth! Strange observation, I know.

    1. We were debating whether or not we should go and if we should maybe go to the exotic feline rescue. Honestly, I would rather have went to the feline rescue. I’ve heard it’s awesome.

It sounds like you had a wonderful holiday! I would love to visit the mountains. It’s been quite some time since I’ve done that.

Thank you for the compliment about my teeth 🙂 I wasn’t born with them, not even close! My teeth were so crooked, but after 4 years and plenty of pain, they are straight. I can’t even go one night without wearing my retainer because the two front teeth will separate. They separated my palate to make my mouth wider. And, that was a random bit of information about me 🙂 Probably tmi…

      1. The feline rescue sounds very neat. Maybe you two can go there next time?

That’s a lot to go through, especially for four years. Not having gone through it myself, I don’t know if you could echo this, but it sure looks like it was worth it.

  8. I think you spent the day in the best way ever, with the one you love. I hope to go to the zoo this summer. My kids even though over 20 still think going to the zoo is a great outing. They even went to the zoo instead of having a bachelor/bachelorette party last year. Too bad the heat and crowds made the day less than perfect. At least you got to enjoy your day off!

      1. I have found that it feels good to activate the painting part of my brain as often as I can. It’s kind of like playing a game, even if I don’t win, it’s fun to play.

      2. I understand that 🙂 I can only paint, write, or read whenever I’m in the right mood, so perhaps I should work on those interests more often.

      3. I sketch when I am inspired, and a bit of that strong thought sticks to the sketch and helps put me at least partly in the mood. If in the mood to do something else creative, follow the muse where it leads.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes that is a flamingo. I didn’t know that they sleep standing on one leg with their heads tucked under their wings 🙂

  9. Zoos are quite different now, oh yes they are. Haven’t been to 1 for a long time. Guess I will be going with my wife now soon next spring or summer. We are starting to work together on a new project that she got me started on. This project gets us both to learn about each other more. So that is what we did on Memorial day this year. We go through our differences & talk some but never have we gotten into this project as we have now. It has helped in memories we haven’t brought up that help us to talk more about our families & health & other things. that’s what brought up some of the new posts I put online on my blog. Hope they were alright to you.
