Chester Even Rules My Sleep

2014-04-16 08.00.46You all know that Chester is my baby and he’s pretty darn funny most of the time.  He does some very eccentric things that I’m not sure I could ever begin to explain, but are highly entertaining nevertheless.  The picture above is not that great, I realize, but I took it half asleep this morning because Chester had overtaken my pillow.  That indentation by his tail is where my head was.  It was too hilarious not to take a picture of.  I honestly didn’t even realize he was there until my phone alarm went off 😉

I sleep very deeply and always have.  We recently removed the curtain from our bedroom because Chester was continuously ripping it off the wall when he flies off the window sill and onto the bed, so we just took it down.  Now it’s too bright in the room for me. I can’t sleep with any light whatsoever and the blaring outside light wasn’t going to work for me.  I took to wearing an eye mask that I bought one time randomly for $1 at Target because I thought it was cute.  It’s black with gold and red trees embroidered on it.  Don’t get me wrong, it was cheap, but cute.  That’s just one of those things that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on.  Well, after we took down the curtain and I started wearing the mask which had been in plastic in my dresser drawer for a year, that’s when Chester decided that the eye mask was pretty awesome.  If I’m not careful and somehow take it off in the morning to see the clock or accidentally in my sleep, he will find it and steal it and then proceed to put it in his water bowl where it becomes soaked and nasty.  I’ve had to clean the thing several times now.  I decided it had to go today when I woke up with allergy-ridden eyes.

Well, the embroidery is tattering and the elastic band that goes around my head to keep it on is almost completely off, all because of Chester.  This is by far his weirdest little habit.  He doesn’t leave it in his water bowl, mind you, he removes it after it’s totally water-logged and then places it in the middle of the kitchen floor and then heads back to bed like nothing’s happened.  I was at Target today and found this one and decided to take it home:

I’m sort of in love with Hello Kitty now and a number of the San X characters 🙂  I thought this was pretty darn cute and honestly it was the only one I could find. It’s one of those odd items that you’re just not sure where to look for it in the store.

As I was saying, I really value my sleep and always have.  I once heard when I was a kid, I suppose, that the human body needs 8 hours of sleep.  Whether or not this is extremely accurate or not, since hearing that, I’ve been very adamant about getting 8 hours of sleep.  I always go to bed to allow for enough time to sleep 8 hours.  My body is extremely in tune with my sleep schedule and like a clock I get sleepy at around 11 pm every night and am able to wake up fully rested in the morning.  This is one of those darn routines that I cannot and will not break.  I refuse to break this and it’s a good thing, but it can get on people’s nerves, even my own sometimes.  It’s why I’ve never liked sleeping over at friend’s houses or “partying” late into the night.  It’s one of the reasons why I say I have an old soul.  I’ve always been this way and don’t intend to change it.  I can seriously tell when I get even slightly less than 8 hours of sleep.

Not only can I not sleep well without an eye mask now, I can’t sleep well AT ALL without my blankie.  Never have and probably never will.

20140416_210137This not my original blankie.  I’ve had 3 others I think.  They all disintegrated into nothing after years of use and washing.

Yes, I have a security blanket.  Yes, I am 24 years old.  These are true confessions 😉  I’ve slept with a “blankie,” a term coined by my mother, my entire life.  I can’t sleep without it.  I’ve tried to break myself of the habit, but to no avail.  K used to think it was funny to hide it around the house and watch me panic to find it, until I cried once because it was causing me an extreme amount of anxiety right before bed.  My mom also sleeps with a blankie.  If you knew us, you’d know the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  It is basically still attached to the tree 😉

This was a random post today, but the new eye mask was my new favorite thing today and I had to share.  It came with it’s own story it turns out 🙂

Do you have any funny sleep habits?

I’d love to hear!

Thanks for reading,

Megan

    1. he is too funny with some things. He is always stealing my stuff and never K’s, which I find pretty funny, but it also makes me special. I always say I’m his favorite 😉

  1. Mewson has to snug with mom, which pushes her over toward my side and I get a little slice of the bed. Or Proulx takes over her whole pillow and I lose mine….

Somehow I get the short end of the stick, I mean bed!

  2. 😀
My habit is that I will take a few minutes to settle in bed, during which I will pay close attention to my body temperature. I will know if I am starting to get the slightest bit warm that a blanket will have to come off, or if just the quilt, that it needs to be changed for a lighter covering and I must get up and do it or else i will wake up too warm in the middle of the night and have trouble getting back to sleep again. Conversely if I am cooling down in that initial few minutes, I know I need to pull up an extra blanket or thicker covering. So every single night is a balancing act of what covers me on the bed.
Also during the cooler times, I will not be able to sleep if my feet aren’t warm so I have a hot water bottle down there all through winter.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

    1. I totally get that! I can’t sleep if I’m not the right temperature. I never lay in bed long before I fall asleep otherwise the temperature is just off. I also can relate to having the covering just right. I need the weight, which in turn makes me too hot, etc. It’s funny the things we do for sleep 🙂 Thanks for sharing Peter!

  3. I am going to be 48 next month and I sleep with a blanket. Only in my family, we call it a “nuni”. I have been through several. It has to be a certain kind of material for me to be able to make it my “nuni”. Back when I was married, many, many years ago, my then husband was actually jealous of it and once gave it to the outside dog lol

    1. I like the word “nuni”, that’s pretty cute 🙂 I’m glad I’m not the only one. I think it’s just comforting to have while sleeping. I usually fall asleep with mine on my face.

  4. I have always slept with some sort of stuffed animal, and I’m 21, lol. Two Christmases ago Kris got me a panda pillow pet thing and it has done wonders for my sleep. I just like to have something to hug, so I can understand how a blankie would be similar.
Also, Chester reminds me so much of my cousin’s cat! She has a Burmese, Diego, and he has the curious habit of drowning his little mouse toys. He once tried to drown a $20 note that he managed to steal from inside her handbag – he’s so cheeky! But so darn cute.

    1. Aw! The panda pillow sounds really sweet 🙂 I need something cute like that. Chester is certainly “cheeky”, which is such a great word by the way 🙂 It describes him perfectly! I hope you’re doing well.

  5. I had me a smile with Chester being all teasing on you.
Sleep is very important and we all need a good chunk of it. Thogh I am luck I can or could sleep anywhere that is if I slept 😀
I love your little cute ways. Keep on smiling. You are Super

    1. I’m very peculiar when it comes to my sleeping habits and sometimes I wish I could sleep a little easier in new places, but just can’t seem to. You’re lucky in that way! Chester is pretty funny and does seem to pick on me more than he does K 🙂

  6. Cats do some seriously odd things. They all have their own unique brand of “I’m going to do this to annoy Mommy”.

The one night I didn’t oil pull and take coconut oil is the night I don’t sleep well, wake up often throughout the night, and wake up in pain the following morning. Coincidence? I think not. I am the rare person that requires a lot more than 8 hours of sleep if you want me to be a civilized human being. Mind you, I was in bed by 10:00 last night and awake at 8:15. I can barely function because of the pain in my body. I just canceled my day and I’m going to eat, take something for the pain, and grab a nap. I feel awful.

Coconut oil will help with your allergies. A couple spoonfuls a day is eliminating mine completely.

    1. So true. I’m 100% sure he just does it to annoy me, or to wake me up. I think he must’ve picked the eye mask because it’s something that is pretty heavily covered in my scent. I’m not too otherwise. He’s funny.

I haven’t heard of coconut oil for allergies, but I believe it. It’s such an amazing product. Have you ever tried oil pulling?

      1. There is a level of charming that some people find tolerable with their cats/dogs and other just find annoying. I don’t appreciate being woken 5+ times a night for odd cat related weirdness, but that was my night last night. I took a sleeping pill and went to bed early (I never take sleeping pills, but I had to, insomnia has been awful.). By the time 11:45 rolled around, that was it. I woke up, I fed her, and then she kept me up. She was so proud of herself. I am sure she got plenty of rest while I was busy out of doors because even though she greeted me when I came home, she’s barely turned up since, except to search through my bag and when it involved food.

I’m sure the eye mask is a curious thing to him. Most cats would wonder what it was and why it was on your face. If it’s unique, they pretty much think it’s a toy for them.

As I stated in my previous comment, I DO oil pull. I’ve been doing it for almost a month, twice a day. It does make a difference and I’ve noticed some changes. I just started using it on my face at night, to calm my skin down when I’ve worn make-up or when my skin feels tight from environmental stressors, etc. It’s not the least bit greasy or thick, I like it a lot.

My overall allergies have gotten better with a few tablespoons of coconut oil per day, which is considered the norm for most people. Pretty soon I will have to buy it by the gallon! The one I use is very tasty and smells really good. People have complained that it’s not supposed to taste good, but I think they’re missing the point. It’s not an artificial taste or smell. I just got my second jar today, I’m like an addict with this stuff. LOL.

  7. Your fur baby is so silly! Cats have such interesting little quirks, which in part makes them so lovable. I have two cats, a brother and sister, both full of cattitude :3 And that Hello Kitty mask is so cute! I might have to check at my Target and see if they have one.

    1. I wish we could’ve adopted Chester’s brother at the time, but someone came just before us and took him. I would’ve loved to see them together. Cats can be so darn funny sometimes 🙂

  8. Oh Megan, cherish your ability to sleep deeply and always get eight hours, I am totally the opposite and do suffer for my lack of sleep…I think I will try either making the room really dark or getting a mask, and a “blankie” sounds like something I could definitely get attached to 🙂 As far as cats go, I think Chester is a real character and in a really good way. I think my opinion counts as I am a total cat person with one adopted cat ‘Dennis’ who is almost 18 years old and one rescued cat (we found him going through our garbage) ‘Jinxsy’ who is almost 2 now. Both have their own quirky personalities which are so endearing and loveable 🙂

    1. I’m certainly attached to my blankie. I’ve actually gone through several of them. THe first was made by my grandma when I was a baby. I wish I still had something of it left. I definitely agree with you! Chester is such a character. K and I are constantly finding the things he does hilarious. I think in some ways it has to do with the extreme amount of attention he gets, being an only cat, and living in a smaller space. Or maybe he’s just naturally a goofball 🙂
