Confession of the Day: I Like Stuffed Animals

I may have slightly mentioned this in the past, but not recently I don’t think.  I have a confession to make: I’m 25 years old and I like stuffed animals.  Let me clarify, though. I don’t like ALL stuffed animals. I hate the cheap, ugly ones from carnivals or amusement parks.  I kind of collect Japanese plushies (AKA stuffed animals).  I like Korean plushies too, but there aren’t as many out there and I haven’t bought any yet.  My current obsessions are Utage Tsuchineko, Alpacasso, and Coroham Coron Sweets plushies, but basically any plushie that’s adorable would be something I like. I don’t have a huge collection because these plushies are collectibles and are kind of expensive.  I have more in storage that are not pictured because I have yet to un-box them since we moved.

To be honest, the reason I wanted to learn crochet is to learn how to create Amigurumi. For those of you who may not know, Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crochet that involves creating animals or inanimate objects with anthropomorphic features.  There’s something so fascinating to me to be able to create my own version of a plushie from nothing but yarn. Here’s the Totoro I made a year ago:

He likes listening to music on my bookshelf 🙂

I have a book called Hello Kitty Crochet, which is really adorable and has the best patterns for making kawaii, Hello Kitty and friend plushies 🙂 Here’s a piece I made for my stepsister for Christmas:

Capture

It’s a really fun hobby that I hope to get better at as time goes on. I’m currently working on an Alpacasso-like pattern of my own. It’s not easy to make a pattern, but it’s coming along. I mentioned I was making it in the past, for those of you who guessed what it was, it’s an alpaca 🙂

I will try to share more of my plushies and Amigurumi creations with you in the future.

Do you have anything you collect?  I also collect teapots and cat figurines, but they are almost all in storage since I moved.

I’d love to hear the things you collect!

Thanks for reading 🙂

Best,

Megan

  1. I used to collect shot glasses. I stopped. However, my son still loves stuffed animals and EVERY time we go out he needs another one. They are little taking up half the room.

    1. Shot glasses are a popular collector’s item. Stuffed animals are great! your son sounds a lot like my nephew who needs a new toy every time my sister goes shopping with him 🙂

  2. Omg love the stuff animals and even more the ones you created so cute!! I am 30 years old and collect stuff animals too. I, like you, hate the cheap ones, but love my Itty Bittys from Hallmark and my Tsum Tsums from the Disney Store. Obsessed with them and always look forward to new releases xoxoxo Janet

  3. I love stuffed animals, too! (And I’m in my 40s — lol) I don’t collect many for myself any more, but I have a habit of buying way too many of them for my daughter. She loves elephants and has a huge collection of stuffed elephants.

Love Amigurumi !! The Totoro you made is so, so cute. And it looks like he is enjoying his music quite a lot.

I collected anime production artwork (cels and sketches) for several years. I am pretty much inactive in that hobby now, as most of the shows I collected are older, which means not much comes on the market any more. But I still take a look every now and again in the hopes of finding a new treasure.

    1. I never have gotten into anime, but I definitely see the appeal. i think that anime artwork is beautiful and unique. I can’t even remember a time I saw an elephant stuffed animal, weird huh? Sounds like a wonderful collection!

  4. CUTE! I still have a pretty big collection of stuffed animals. The last to Christmases my boyfriend has gotten me something strange. Last time it was a really nice octopus and the year before that it was a rhino that was part of the gift package for donating to WWF to adopt a rhino. ❤ Lots of Steve Jackson chibi cthulhus (a witch, a zombie and a mini Valentine's cthulhu). Tons of tigers and some weird stuff like brain cells, Egyptian gods and historical figures.

  5. Love your stuffed animals. I am in my midyears and I still find stuffed animals comforting. Like you said not big large ones. I have small stuffed animals, just a handful that sit in the middle of my bed at the headboard. It is such a comfort to find them there and they give me peace when I go to bed at night.

  6. Love love love amigurumi!! There’s something a bit magical seeing them come to be at your own hands!! Good on you for trying to make your own pattern – it is no easy feat! You should add it to Ravelry if you decide to share it 🙂
I’m 22 and I can’t possibly imagine not having cute things like plushies in my life three years from now, lol.

    1. Magical is a good word to describe it 🙂 I will definitely post to Ravelry if I get to that point! Hopefully this project doesn’t get pushed to the side like most of my projects 😀

  7. I’m 27 and I also collect stuffed animals. I didn’t really think it was a “confession-y” type thing–I always figured most female-identified people liked plushies lol! I have TONS of them. I got rid of a lot when I moved, but I still have a big box of them in my closet that I can’t bear to get rid of.

I also collect notebooks, even though I rarely write in them.

    1. For me and the close-minded town I grew up in, this would be something I feel I need to “confess.” Although I have to say, I really don’t care now if anyone thinks I’m weird for collecting them.
That’s funny that you collect notebooks and never use them. I’m totally the same with cute journals. 🙂

      1. I’ve always been oblivious to the judgments of others (which is quite different from not caring about the judgments of others; wouldn’t that be a dream come true) so it didn’t even occur to me that people would think it odd. Now I wonder how many of my friends in my later teens/early adult years saw my bedroom full of stuffed animals and side-eyed the heck out of me lol!

  8. I collect Jessica Galbreth Dark Faerie art prints, posters, and pretty much anything of hers I can get my hands on. I have a nice Boyds Bears & Friends collection as well. Do first edition books count?

I’m sorry I haven’t been commenting on your posts these last few months. I was unaware that I somehow became unsubscribed to about 90% of what I was reading (I figured that out this morning, which just goes to show you I’ve had a rough few months!). I will, however, go back and read whatever I may have missed.

Give Chester a kiss. 🙂 Hope you’re doing well.

    1. My mom and grandmother collected Boyds Bears for years. The faerie prints are beautiful. I’ve never seen them before, but I do like them. Good to hear from you! Hope you’re doing well 🙂

  9. That sounds like a fun hobby. I collect movie dvds, horror dvds, pro wrestling dvds and sports dvds. I have so many dvds its crazy but it helps me cope and inspires my writing. I like reliving old childhood memories from pro wrestling in the 90s. I also have collected paintings by my friend Kelly. I got five of her greatest paintings.

      1. Thanks I am watching some of my wrestling movie library. It extends from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. I am watching the 90s right now brings back happy memories. But like they say all good things come to an end

  10. That Totoro and Hello Kitty look superb! Large stuffed animals are great to cuddle in winter when you are on your own, they hold onto your heat and keep you warm.

  11. I’m 19 and my boyfriend just surprised me by ordering me a stuffed Stitch to my address – I saw the ‘Disney’ box and the man in the post room got really excited too because I had no idea what it would be. I teared up when I found out I just love them so much omg.

  12. Om I’ve never crocheted a stuffed animal but I have a large collection of soft toys that I have been growing since I was five or six. I am now nearly 24. I am yet to make a purchase of a new soft toy hear in Spain. I might make that my birthday request! Most of my soft toys are with one of my friends in New Zealand who has the same obsession. We always gave each other a stuffed animal for a our birthdays before I moved to Europe. So she looks after them for me. Because… you know… they need that…
