Adventures in Polymer Clay

For the next couple of weeks, K is going to be in Korea.  He’s been there since early Thursday morning, so it has just been me and Chester at home.  I think Chester is bored because he play buddy is not around. I think I bore him.  Luckily, we have a hummingbird feeder right outside the door and we have one hummingbird that makes an appearance about every twenty minutes. He’ll swoop back into the trees and then back to the feeder. He’s adorable.  Chester LOVES watching for the bird, so that keeps him entertained.  In this picture, you can see him watching the hummingbird 🙂

My life without K is strange. I usually end up doing nothing during the weekends, which can be relaxing for maybe the first few hours, but then is such a downer toward the afternoon.  I feel like i’ve done nothing productive.  If I don’t watch what I’m doing, I will hyper focus on my computer and surfing the web (is that phrase still said?).  It’s either that or I obsessively clean, which I guess is at least somewhat productive.  I usually ignore cleaning because I know I won’t be able to stop unless everything in my house is spotless, so I just don’t even start.  I think that’s kind of what I’ve been doing on the internet.  I don’t stop searching things online until I’m pretty sure I’ve read just about everything there is to read about the thing I’m looking for. Hours will go by before I realize it.  It’s frustrating, especially if I know there are things that I actually need to do.

I’m sitting here now watching Chester stare at me, with Family Guy playing in the background for familiar noise and laughs, of course.

Usually when K is around, I have SO much to do.  Our nights are limited and we usually go to the gym for an hour or more daily during the week.  He usually gets me to go out and do things, like groceries, car washing, and laundry.  I have done those things, but at my own pace.  They are getting done, but I have had a LOT more time to do the things that interest me alone.

I have been wanting to learn how to make miniature food and items out of polymer clay. I’ve admired Etsy sellers, such as Fatally Feminine Designs and Cherrydot, who sell some amazing Polymer clay food jewelry.  Some of their pieces are so realistic looking, I could eat them! I while back I bought some clay, but never went anywhere with it.  Now that I have some time on my hands, I’ve started working on making miniature food and jewelry.  Here are some of my creations so far!

Lt to Rt: Macarons, macaron heart, rose earrings in red, marbled rose earrings

I was really proud of myself for getting to the point where I am making jewelry that doesn’t look like an infant monkey made.  I got a lot of compliments when I wore those earrings!  🙂

I’ve really wanted to try to make realistic looking clay food, so I read this tutorial on how to make polymer clay bread. I made three pieces of “bread” yesterday and I think they turned out pretty well!  What do you think?

Instead of using chalk like in the tutorial to color the bread, I used eyeshadow from Chirp Cosmetics! 🙂 I had no other loose powdery pigment, so I improvised and it worked great.
Here are some closeups of the rose earrings.  What do you think of them?  I actually used a mold from MoldMuse on Etsy that I bought a few weeks back. It is so useful when making clay charms and the roses come out perfectly.
Have you ever tried making anything with polymer clay? If so, what have you made and how do you like working with it?

Thanks for reading everyone!

  1. Oh wow! I have a block of white polymer clay at home that’s just sitting in my craft box. This looks fun! I never got around to making anything for fear all I would create are amorphous blobs

  2. So kawaii! My friend True makes these things, so I have many of them. My girls, too. She’s sent the girls adorable charms with clips and they put them on their backpacks! So kawaii! 😀
I would totally wear the rose earrings!

    1. Very kawaii! Aw, that sounds awesome! I bought several pieces of jewelry findings to make charms, so we’ll see how that goes. I am working on making pieces of birthday cake now 🙂 The earrings are so fun to make and incredibly rewarding to be able to have something that is OOAK made by myself 🙂

      1. That would be a great idea. I wish I could wear pierced earrings. I wore them for many years then I started having trouble with my left ear swelling and getting infected. Even after getting it healed up I still can’t seem to wear them now. I just gave up. If I was crafty enough, I would like to develop a way to make something besides clip on earrings. They hurt my ears too. Oh well. Maybe you can come up with an idea. Good luck. 🙂

      2. I have always had the same problem with my earrings, so I can’t wear them for long at all. I thought it was just the nickle in them, but no, it’s almost all earrings. I think it’s because I got them done at a jewelry store with a gun a long time ago rather than a professional piercing, but who knows!
